The Waiting Room

When the medical team has done their job, these patients face discharge into emptiness - no ride home, no one to check on them, no proof that anyone cares whether they make it through the night.

That's where you come in. You're not there to fix their medical problems or solve their life circumstances. You're there to sit with them. To listen. To treat them like they matter - because they do. Sometimes you help arrange practical things like transportation or medication instructions. But mostly, you're simply present. You remember their names. You ask about their lives. You become, for a few hours, the person they matter most to. This isn't about saving everyone. Some patients will push you away. Some will return to the same circumstances that left them alone.
